In the 1800s, South Dakota was still known as Dakota Territory – a rough and tumble lawless frontier. Men and women, like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, created legends. Gold miners sought their fortunes. Meanwhile, explorers like Lewis and Clark and pioneer families like Laura Ingalls Wilder’s discovered the quiet beauty of our prairies. South Dakota is home to the Great Sioux Nation, made up of nine Dakota, Lakota and Nakota tribes. More than 62,000 Native Americans live in South Dakota. The tribes have rich traditions that are as vibrant as the land itself. Comprising nearly a third of the state, this region features the famous Black Hills. Named by the Lakota, the mountainous Black Hills extend 100 miles, are 50 miles wide, and reach heights of more than 7,000 feet. Within the Black Hills are 14 mountain lakes and more than 800 miles of meandering streams containing brook, brown and rainbow trout. On the surrounding prairie, reservoirs and ranch stock dams also provide angling fun. More than 50,000 stock dams, brimming with largemouth bass, northern pike and a variety of panfish, dot the western half of the state. Since many are found on private land, permission is needed before fishing. In South Dakota, you can imagine yourself back in time with a hike along the Lewis and Clark Trail, learn about another culture through Native American experiences and cultural heritage festivals, or enjoy the arts in our numerous galleries, theatres and open artist studios. Enjoy our breathtaking scenery and our rich culture and history. Make this vacation one you will never forget. South Dakota adopted the honey bee as the state insect in 1978. |
